The letters of Paul in the New Testament have been the ground of controversy since the sixteenth century, primarily over differences in the doctrine of justification. Even in the apostolic period, the apostle Peter noted the difficulty in understanding Paul (2 Pet. 3:15-16). It seems necessary for any Christian who takes Scripture seriously to grapple with Paul and his theology.
